Impact of air quality on health in Belgium (2023)
There are different ways of representing the health impact of air pollution. In this report, we consider premature deaths (death of a person at an age below life expectancy).
The total number of premature deaths in 2023 in Belgium due to PM₂.₅ is estimated at about 5,000 and those for ozone at 2,600. The number of premature deaths due to NO₂ in 2023 in Belgium is 1300. When interpreting these figures, the uncertainties associated with these calculations and the fact that premature deaths due to NO₂ and particulate matter cannot simply be added up must be taken into consideration.
